Why is Journaling Before Bed Important for Health

We’ve all had those sleepless nights, where our brains just wouldn’t switch off, filled with racing thoughts about our unsolved problems. Then we wake up the next day feeling worse, now both stressed and exhausted, and the cycle continues. Believe it or not, journaling can help that.

How, you ask?

Quality sleep is absolutely key for good health as it allows you to rest and recharge, enabling you to wake up as the best version of yourself. One way to improve the quality of your sleep is to clear your mind of any negative or intrusive thoughts before you get into bed. Journaling is a great method to do so, especially as part of your nighttime ritual.

Benefits of Journaling

Writing down the day’s activities and your thoughts about them helps you clear your mind at the end of the day. This deeper level of processing helps you slow and calm down, preparing our minds for restful sleep.

Journaling can also help you organise your thoughts and give you a new perspective on your experiences. Sometimes, we might find ourselves overplaying or underplaying our emotions towards situations around us. Putting your feelings into words enables you to recognise and reconcile with them.

Journaling can help boost your productivity. Jotting down a quick to-do list for the week enables you to plan your time more efficiently. This then frees up your cognitive resources for other mental activities such as memory and coping with stress. Even eternally busy people like founders and multi-hyphenates carve time out of their days to update their journal as an outlet for their emotions and creativity outside of work. This helps keep them alert and focused when they need to.

Your journal can also double as a health tracker. Regular journaling allows you to spot patterns and symptoms of any health issues when you look back. It can also help you keep track of any health goals that you’re working towards.

How to get started

Journaling looks different to everyone; there are no hard and fast rules to this. Personalising your journaling experience helps you to make it a habit that you can stick to and enjoy. That said, here are some journaling prompts that you can consider:

  • What do you want to look back on? It could be a playback of your daily experiences, the emotions you felt during the day, or even your health for the day.
  • What do you want to achieve next? This is a way for you to look back on your accomplishments and plan for the week ahead. Write down your goals for the week; they don’t have to be lofty ones. It can be as simple as “I want to go for a run at least twice this week”. Writing this down makes you more likely to hold yourself accountable to achieving the goal.
  • What or who are you grateful for today? Practicing gratitude daily helps you recognise the little things in your life that have had a positive impact on you.
  • What do you need to vent out today? Your journal can lend a listening ear for the days where nothing seems to have gone right. Purging your mind of the day’s stress, anxiety and anger helps you process them in a healthy way and allows you to let go for the time being. This helps you go to bed with a calm and clear mind.

Tips for Journaling

Journaling is a habit that needs to be cultivated over time for you to feel its positive impact on your sleep quality and health. Try to write in your journal regularly, perhaps every day or every couple of days.

We’d also recommend incorporating journaling into your nighttime routine that you go through before you get into bed.

There are numerous journaling apps out in the market, with cool features that even allow you to upload photos, track your mood and even your health. Or you can go the no-frills route and just use the Notes app on your devices to type up your entry. It’s important to be mindful of the screen time, especially if you’re going to be using your device right before bed.

We personally love old-school journaling, in a physical Moleskin notebook that we can write and draw in. We find that writing our thoughts down on paper really helps us wind down and clear our minds.

Journaling can give you the peace of mind that you need at the end of the day. Instead of carrying that unwanted baggage around in your mind, put it down on paper and feel lighter. Happy journaling!

5 Ways to Make Working from Home Easier

Working from home, while convenient, does come with its own set of issues. Blurry boundaries between work and home life, Zoom fatigue and burnout are just some of the negative effects that we’ve all been facing for the past year.

As many of us transition to a post-COVID world, flexible work routines are becoming the new normal. It’s good to make the most out of the situation and make working from home a more pleasant experience for ourselves.

Here are some tips that we believe can make working from home a little easier for you.

Get moving

It’s tempting to stay in your seat the whole day, especially when you’re at home. Stepping away from your screen and moving around ever so often allows you to loosen your stiff muscles and rest your eyes. Light stretching at your desk, laps around your living room or even a 5-min dance break will help you shake the stress off and leave you feeling refreshed.

Make time for breaks

Having breakfast, lunch and sometimes even dinner in front of our screens, working for hours on end without getting up – sound familiar? If it does, it’s time for you to switch it up. While we can get our meals delivered straight to our doors when working from home, it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t still take the full hour. Spend it doing and thinking of something other than work, like watching an episode of your favourite show or an article that you’ve meaning to read. Scheduling in regular breaks for meals and movement (and sticking to them!) allows you to break up your day and make you feel less overwhelmed.

Call a friend

Physical isolation doesn’t mean social isolation. After spending most of your working hours with your colleagues, it can be slightly jarring to not see them as often. Make time between your tasks to stay in touch with your work friends, through calls and texts. Talking it out with your friends can help take your mind off the stress that you’re feeling and even help gain a new perspective.

Check out on time

When your home becomes your office, it’s natural to feel tempted to keep working even after your regular work hours have ended. “I don’t have anywhere to go or anything else to do anyway” is an excuse we’ve heard ourselves give when we continue working into the night. This, however, is a straight road to burnout. It’s important for you to set clear boundaries for yourself and step away physically and mentally from work.

Be compassionate to yourself

As adults, it’s hard for us to accept changes to our routines and lives, especially such a major one like working from home and self-isolation. It’s more important now than ever to show some compassion towards yourself. Cut yourself some slack – it’s okay to slip up, it’s okay to not perform at 100% every single day. Feeling stressed is completely normal, but don’t let it consume you. Practise self-care through your favourite hobbies or a wind-down ritual before bed. Remember that this too shall pass, and that you’re just human.

Me, Myself and Mum – Life Lessons from the Kitchen

From being their little sous-chefs in the kitchen to treating them to a special meal with our first paycheck, the mother-daughter bond is truly a unique one that evolves beautifully as we grow up.

We grow up looking to them for inspiration, advice and unconditional support – 24/7. They’ve had countless sleepless nights caring and worrying for us, sacrificing their own health for ours. Now as adults, it’s time for us to shower them with love and attention that they truly deserve – and to let them sleep in at last.

This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating this unique relationship by featuring two beautiful mother-daughter duos as they share a peek into their precious bond.

Steffi, 33 and her mother Ruby, 60.

How would you describe your relationship with Mum?

She’s like a very close older sister that I can always rely on for any advice, be it for work or life – she’s always able to ground me. Mum is also a friend, to whom I’ll rant, share secrets and gossip!

But mum will always be mum, there are things that she’ll sense even if I don’t say it – she’ll know and she’ll be there for me. She’s like my safe haven, someone I can truly trust and always fall back on.

What was your favourite moment with mum, Steffi?

I’m Cantonese, and in our culture, on the night before Chinese New Year, we have a tradition to stay up till really late at night. I’m really fond of the times when Mum and I would stay up, watch lame Cantonese comedy movies, and just talk about random things in life.

What was your favourite moment with your daughter, Ruby?

Whenever we’re eating. I love seeing her enjoy my cooking, those are the favourite moments I have with my daughter.

What does quality time with mum look like?

It involves food, and a lot of talking – most likely about food itself, but about things in general as well. For example, how I’m doing at work, life updates about my husband and I etc. Food is definitely a key feature, though. We either eat out or have mum cook.
She’ll also share her perspective and advice about things that I share with her. Sometimes it might not be what I want to hear, but it’ll definitely be something that I need to hear. There’s always a lot of encouragement for me in her words.

When was a moment in your life when you felt like “I wish mum was here!”?

Once when I first started living on my own, there was a really HUGE cockroach that managed to climb onto my desk and brushed against my hand. That was one moment that I really wished my mum was around because I knew she’d definitely save me. But, oh well, I had to save myself and take care of the problem (don’t ask me what happened to the cockroach).

When was the last time you both argued and why? How did you both resolve it?

Honestly, I don’t remember arguing with my mum. I think mum always gives in to me, which I’m extremely grateful for. She has allowed me to explore and fall. However, she has always encouraged me and given me the time and space to stand back up again.

What is your deepest confession to your mum?

Sorry that I prioritised work over family time. Thank you for always having my back.

Me, Myself and Mum – From Mum to Best Friend

There’s nothing quite as special as the life-long bond between a mother and her daughter. As little girls, we look up to our mothers as role models – the superwoman who knows and does what’s best for everyone. As we grow older, our mums become our best friends with whom we can share our deepest fears and insecurities, knowing that we will get unconditional love and support in return.

Their sleepless nights from worry ensured that we got to sleep soundly and comfortably. It’s now time for us to show our appreciation – by letting her finally sleep in.

This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating this unique relationship by featuring two beautiful mother-daughter duos as they share a peek into their precious bond.

Fianne, 35, mother of two and her mother Jasmine, 58

How would you describe your relationship with Mum?

I have a very close relationship with my mum, where we’re able to talk about almost anything. We confide a lot in each other because I feel safest with her. I know that she’ll always have my back and be on my side no matter what.

What was your favourite moment with mum, Fianne?

My favourite moments with mummy were when she used to take me out as a little girl, just the two of us. We spent time swimming, visiting bookstores, and I remember relishing the quality time and undivided attention from her.

What was your favourite moment with your daughter, Jasmine?

I love spending time with her having afternoon tea, baking together and enjoying the bakes after. I also love listening to her play the piano and watching her fall asleep on the same bed.

What does quality time with mum look like?

Chilling over afternoon tea at her home and chatting about everything under the sun! When we lived together, we used to stay up to lounge around and chit chat through the night. Before I had kids of my own, we spent more alone time together and would go for walks in the park, or do girly stuff like shopping and going to the spa.

When was a moment in your life when you felt like “I wish mum was here!”?

There was a Chinese New Year which I spent in my husband’s hometown after we’d just got married and I missed home terribly, because I’d spent every single Chinese New Year of my life with my family in Singapore. There were moments I wished mummy was with me, like during our reunion dinner and when I went visiting.

When was the last time you both argued and why? How did you both resolve it?

I don’t remember any specifics, although there have certainly been times when we’ve disagreed and argued. Usually, mummy is the one who initiates talking to me first and we’ll just forget everything and hang out again! She always tells me that there is no feud between a mum and daughter.

What is your deepest confession to your mum?

Coming from a traditional and conservative family, we don’t exchange “I love you’s” so my deepest confession is that I love you mummy! I really admire the way she loves us so deeply and unconditionally, and I wish to be more like her in the way I love my own children.

The Dos and Don’ts of Caring for Your Lingerie

Your lingerie is a precious and delicate investment, costing you a pretty penny for a lifetime of comfort and peace – and should be treated as such. Spending a little more effort in taking good care of them now will help reduce waste and have a positive impact on the environment, your wallet and your body. Make your favourite lingerie items last a little longer with our lingerie care tips!

Washing Your Lingerie

Do’s:

Handing washing is the best way to extend the lifespan of your lingerie, especially if they’re made of delicate fabrics like lace, cotton and silk. Soak them in lukewarm water and mild soap before rinsing and wringing them gently. If you’re washing your lingerie in the washing machine (make sure that they’re machine-wash appropriate!), separate them from your other clothes into a lingerie bag before placing it in the machine. Ensure that bra hooks are clipped so that they don’t snag on your other clothes and get damaged.

jedors sleepshirt and kiri lingerie
Don’ts:

Don’t use strong soaps or bleach when washing your intimates. The chemicals in strong detergents will break down the fabric and colour of the lingerie. Take note to treat your delicates with care – avoid aggressive handling during handwashing like excessive wringing or scrubbing, as this will ruin the material and shape. Never place your lingerie in the dryer as the heat will shorten the lifespan of the fabric, fade colours and even potentially cause them to shrink.

Our Kiri Lingerie collection is made of polyamide and elastane, a blended synthetic fabric that is durable yet soft. Specially designed to be as fuss-free as possible, our Kiri Lingerie can be washed in the washing machine and dried without worry of shrinkage. It’s perfect for those looking for long-lasting lingerie essential that’s low maintenance and extremely easy to care for.

Storing Your Lingerie

Do’s

After they’re completely dry, gently fold and stack your lingerie and store them in a cool, dry place. Face the cups of your bras outwards and stack them to preserve their shape and size. You can also consider placing them in a bra storage organiser or drawer set away from the rest of your clothes to prevent any snagging or transference of colour.

Don’ts

Avoid folding your bras in half. This will make them lumpy and uncomfortable and cause extra wear and tear to their wires and seams.

Replacing Your Lingerie

Do’s

It’s advisable to throw out and replace your regularly-used lingerie every 12 months. This is to ensure that your intimate areas are protected from the bacteria and germs that can remain on old, worn out lingerie even after repeated washing. Maintaining good personal hygiene e.g., clean bathroom habits and regular showers, also helps to extend the lifespan of your lingerie by reducing the amount of bacteria that can transfer onto your delicates.

What is the best sleeping position for you

Ever woken up with a stiff neck or back and had your entire day ruined? The position that you sleep in has a huge impact on not just how well you sleep but the rest of your waking day as well.

So which position is the best to get a good night’s sleep? It all depends on your needs. Different sleeping positions can have different benefits, and you might find yourself favouring different positions depending on your physical health and needs.

Let’s look at some of the common sleeping positions and their benefits.

Fetal Position

This is the most popular position by far, and with good reason. The curled position, with your knees tucked into your chest, helps alleviate lower back pain and snoring among adults. It is also especially favoured by pregnant women as it improves circulation for both the mother and baby and reduces pressure on their veins and internal organs.

However, curling into the position too tightly for too long can leave you feeling slightly stiff in the neck, and limit deep breathing during the night.

On your Stomach

This sleeping position can help adults with their snoring and sleep apnea issues, as their tongues and soft tissues are pulled down on and airways are opened. However, this position isn’t advisable for pregnant women and those with existing neck and back issues because of the stress it places on your spine and joints. When sleeping on your stomach, your neck and back are out of alignment as you need to twist your neck out to breathe.

If you’re used to sleeping on your stomach, you can use a thin pillow to reduce the angle between your head and neck and keep them in alignment. Placing a pillow under your hips can also help reduce lower back pain. Stretch well before and after sleep to loosen your muscles and get your body in alignment.

On your Side

Similar to the fetal position, sleeping on your side is generally great for you. Your spine is well supported by the natural curve of your body and it can help with snoring and sleep apnea issues. Did you know that the side that you sleep on also matters? Sleeping on your left side (the side on which your heart and certain important organs for digestion are) can help with digestion and reduce heartburn

As with most positions, sleeping on one side throughout the night can cause some stiffness in your shoulders and jaw tightness. For those concerned about their skin, sleeping on your side for too long can also contribute to wrinkles.

Choose a good and supportive pillow to avoid neck and back pain. Placing a firm pillow between your legs helps to align your hips and reduce lower back stiffness.

On your Back

Sleeping on your back has been widely proven to be the best position to sleep in with a multitude of health benefits. Your spine and neck are in full alignment due to gravity. This also helps reduce pressure on your joints, so those with hip and knee pains are most comfortable sleeping in this position. Sleeping on your back limits contact between your pillow and your face, helping to keep it clean and slow down the onset of wrinkles.

However, sleeping on your back can also trigger and worsen sleep apnea issues, as your tongue is more likely to rest on your airways. Those with existing back pain should ensure that they are well-supported, perhaps with an additional soft pillow under their back.

On average, we spend about 26 years of our lives sleeping. It’s important to not spend them sleeping in uncomfortable positions that can negatively impact the rest of the time you spend awake.

Establishing good sleeping habits like a simple night-time ritual and wearing comfortable clothing to bed can also help improve the quality of your sleep in a big way.

It might be tough to inculcate new sleeping habits, especially as an adult, but don’t stress too much about it. Listen to your body and do what works for you at a gradual pace and in a healthy manner.

3 reasons why you should pay more importance to lingerie

Rawbought Kiri Seamless lingerie, black set. For the blog article, reasons to pay more importance to lingerie

From growing into your curves as an adolescent to keeping up with motherhood and beyond, your body is ever-evolving. And your lingerie should evolve with you, boosting your confidence when you need it, supporting you from within as you conquer your day.

Many of us look at our lingerie purely for day-to-day utility and shy away from certain styles and designs, considering them too risqué and indulgent for something that is worn under your clothes. We believe that your lingerie is deeply tethered to your emotions and confidence, and should pay more careful consideration in your sartorial choices.

We take a look at the reasons why you should pay more importance to your lingerie.

Comfort

Lingerie in pop culture has a narrow definition. The image of a svelte lady in matching lacy inner wear is one of the first things many of us associate with lingerie. Here at Rawbought, we believe that lingerie should first and foremost be about comfort, which can look different to different people. It’s about how you feel when you put on that set of lingerie – and not just about the physical comfort i.e. the straps, wires and elastics. Do you feel empowered and confident? Does it give you a sense of peace and freedom? We believe that lingerie is not all about sexy lace and uncomfortable straps – it should be about feeling good and comfortable in your second skin. It’s important to explore your tastes in lingerie to find sets that speak to your soul, no matter the occasion or outfit.

Health

As something that you wear every single day, your lingerie should be deeply in tune with your physical health. It’s important to wear lingerie that is well-constructed and provides adequate support. As it sits directly on your skin, you should ensure that your lingerie is made out of good quality materials that do not harm or irritate your skin.

Many of us are guilty of this – wearing old bras and underwear that do not fit anymore, either for sentimental or financial reasons, or just out of plain laziness. Too-tight bras can result in real pain in your neck and back muscles, and even causing breathing issues in the long-term. It is absolutely essential to wear bras that mould well to your chest, to avoid such pain and future health issues such as tissue damage.

Self-Esteem

“I don’t have anybody to buy and wear lingerie for”, “I’m too old for sexy lingerie” – sound familiar to you? These are excuses that some of us give ourselves for not investing in beautiful lingerie that don’t serve an immediate functional purpose in our daily lives.

You don’t have to have another person or a special occasion to wear cute lingerie, you should wear it for yourself! We often get carried away with devoting so much of our time and energy to our careers and home lives, and neglect to build and retain our own identity. Beautiful lingerie can be a way for you to boost your self-esteem from within, and celebrate your body and sensuality – for yourself, at whatever size and whatever age.

Celebrating Women in Leadership

International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on the 8th of March, is an opportunity for us to reflect on the progress we’ve made, to call for change and to celebrate the women in our lives who’ve shown courage and determination in the face of adversity. This year, we’ve chosen to highlight the resilience of women in leadership, and showcase four brilliant entrepreneurs who’ve come out of the pandemic stronger than ever. They share the lessons they’ve learnt and some thoughts on how you can become the best version of yourself every day.

Take time out for your interests outside of work

Miss Universe Singapore 2020, Bernadette Belle, chats with Rawbought on IWD

The pandemic forced all of us inside our homes for extended periods f time, transforming what was once a personal sanctuary into a space where you lived and worked with no boundaries in between. These blurred lines between your work and personal life means that extra effort needs to be made to get in touch with the creative side of yourself, shares Estee Hamid, Creative Director at Phish Digital. Reading for inspiration, playing and creating music, engaging with nature and journaling are just some of the ways Bernadette Belle, Miss Universe Singapore 2020 who’s a host, model and actress, spent her time that she carved out just for herself outside of work and other obligations. Creating or engaging in something that rewards your mind and soul is essential in keeping your mental and emotional health in check.

Unwinding with self-care

Acknowledging the stress and turbulence you’re going through is surprisingly tough. It’s important to take a conscious step back and take a break to unwind and reset.

Denies Kuar, founder of LivingDNA on the set of Rawbought's IWD campaign

Self-care doesn’t need to be an elaborate routine. Denise Kaur, Founder and Creative Director of homeware brand Living DNA, finds pockets of time during her busy day, to take a deep breath and let her mind settle before continuing with her work.

Candid shot of Daphne Tan, founder of candles of light on the set of rawbought's IWD campaign

For those looking for something more fancy, Daphne Tan, Founder of homegrown artisanal scent brand Candles of Light, recommends spending half an hour in a quiet room with a scented candle with a calming and soothing aroma that will help settle your emotions. Denise takes it a step further by putting on her favourite facemask to refresh her skin from the comfort of her home. Wearing a comfy set of pyjamas also helps lift your spirits, putting you in a good mood for bed automatically, shares Bernadette, who loves our buttery-soft Je Dors PJs.

Prioritising yourself

The fallout from the pandemic has been incredibly demanding on all of us in many ways. You might have been compelled to stretch yourself and spend your energy in difficult and uncomfortable ways for far too long, which can take a major toll on your emotional well-being. Estee shares that while it might be tough, it’s best to set clear boundaries and learn how to say no to things that can potentially have a negative effect on you. After all, if you don’t prioritise yourself, who else will?

Daphne advises to find a good balance between having time for the people in your life and your own needs. This will help you to retain your own identity and sense of worth in the long run.

Estee Hamid showing off her chess skills on the set of Rawbought's IWD campaign

Estee also shares that this pandemic has taught her to take some time to pause and appreciate her life’s journey and enjoy the moments as they happen.

While the worst of the pandemic might be over for many of us, the experience has emphasised the importance of health in a way like never before. As we get on the daily grind to take charge of our lives and achieve great things, it’s easy to put our health on the backburner in favour of seemingly “more important things”. We believe that rest and recuperation is just as important as hard work – it allows us to thrive creatively and improves our overall wellbeing.

How Pyjamas can help improve your sleep and overall health

Your physical and mental balance is highly sensitive and can be tipped by many things, from your usual suspects: eating right and regular exercise, to the lesser known elements e.g. your pyjamas. Yes, your pyjamas. A pair of comfy PJs can do you more good than you realise.

As the lines start to blur between our working, relaxation and sleep hours, pyjamas have come to mean “anything that you don’t wear out of the house”. While an old, oversized T-shirt might be convenient, the benefits of having dedicated sleepwear far outweigh that. We believe that your sleepwear should be conscious choice you make, for your health and wellbeing.

Let’s take a look at how your pyjamas can actually help improve your sleep and overall health!

Pyjamas tell your body that it’s time for rest

While pyjamas are (generally) not sentient, wearing them before you head to bed does help your brain make the association between your pyjamas and sleep. This then signals your body to start winding down and preparing for sleep.

When your body is adequately prepared for bedtime, you naturally fall asleep more quickly. Your quality of sleep also remains high as your brain is “ready” to rest and quiets itself down. Having a relaxing bed-time routine also has a big impact on the quality of your sleep, and your overall health.

Rawbought's launch collection, the Je Dors long pj set in lilac.

A good set of pyjamas ensures undisturbed sleep

T-shirts and shirts that you repurpose as sleepwear were not made to be worn to bed, but for activities during your waking hours. As such, the materials used might not be entirely suitable for sleep – from stifling fits and fabrics to awkwardly bulky buttons that dig into your skin.

Ever woken up sweating or freezing, because the weather changed during the night? What you wore to bed played a huge part in your body’s reaction to the change in temperature.

Your body’s core temperature dips while you’re asleep and increases when you’re about to wake up as a result of your natural circadian rhythm that regulates your sleep-wake cycles.

Your sensitivity to temperatures also changes when you’re asleep, with your environment and clothing being the largest trigger for that. Sleepwear is specifically designed for you in your sleeping hours, by taking into consideration what your body experiences through the night. Usually made from soft, breathable fabric without obtrusive elements, pyjamas help regulate your body temperature to help you stay asleep.

Pyjamas should make you feel good inside and out

Your feelings and emotions right before fall asleep can have a significant impact on the quality of your sleep and even on your dreams. If you’re feeling down, stressed, or not particularly positive in any way, you might find yourself struggling to fall asleep or waking up tired and not fully rested.

Affirming yourself through nightly reflections, a dedicated self-care night routine, or even choosing a set of pyjamas that make you feel cosy or sexy are some ways you can improve your mood before you head to bed.
